Cairn Risk Consulting Ltd (www.cairnrisk.com) is an engineering risk management consultancy. We provide complementary services that combine to enable the transition to net carbon zero in a safe, effective and attentive way.

We are looking for an interesting and thought-provoking infographic which grabs people’s attention and entices them into reading a Technical Paper we are writing on “Sustainable by Design”.

The ultimate objective of the energy transition is to transform the global energy sector from fossil-based to net carbon zero. It will be delivered by new engineering projects such as offshore wind farms, solar parks, energy storage facilities and hydrogen plant, as well as repurposing oil and gas facilities, and upgrading and adapting energy distribution and transmission networks.

These assets (plant) pose a risk to people and people pose a risk to the safe, reliable operation of the assets. These risks must be managed through design. Similarly, the asset can impact the planet (environment, society and economy) and the planet can pose a risk to the plant. Again, these risks must be managed through design.

This two-way relationship between plant and people and plant and planet (so with the plant/assets at the centre of things) nicely encapsulates what we mean by “Sustainable by Design”.

For a project to be considered “Sustainable by Design”, it must be designed to:

 Safeguard the HEALTH & SAFETY of workers and the public throughout full lifecycle.
 Protect the ENVIRONMENT at a micro and macro level in the short and long-term.
 Ensure SECURITY of the asset from physical and cyber threats.
 Achieve reliable operation to promote a just and resilient ECOMONY.
 Promote a fair and ethical SOCIETY.

We want to articulate these contributing elements to “Sustainable by Design” through an infographic of a healthy tree where the 5 elements above form the roots of the tree helping the tree flourish and grow. The roots should be labelled with the above text with the capital text standing out clearly. The tree itself should be labelled “Sustainable by Design”. By depicting a bright, healthy landscape we can show the bright, sustainable future that will be achieved if we deliver the Energy Transition in this way. So, if we deliver each and every project in this way, the energy transition will be delivered on a sustainable basis – so a “bottom-up approach”. Also, it would be good if we could suggest that the tree influences the root structure (e.g. by showing some emerging roots) to show that societal attitudes and views are continuously evolving and driving what is “sustainable by design” – so a “top-down” approach.

In terms of styling, we’d like the infographic to echo our Brand Guide, particularly colours and fonts. We’d like our brand echoed within the infographic – e.g., by incorporating our Cairn icon (see brand guide) into the infographic in a fairly subtle way.

In terms of size, we’re looking for it to be sized in “widescreen” proportions – so 16:9 in proportion.
