Design and Spec a Box for my Subscription Service
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
I am looking to have a shipping / presentation box (and possibly insert) designed and spec'd. At this point, my priority is not the aesthetic design (colors, logos, etc.), but rather I am looking to have the box physically designed with specifications so that manufacturers can quote and ultimately build the box.
I am in the due diligence phase of starting a business that will involve shipping acrylic photo frames (one frame per box). I've attached two images of the frame for reference, including one with approximate dimensions. In addition to the L x W dimensions given for the frames, I would need about 1" total of inner box depth to accommodate the frame's thickness, plus, as depending on the client, there may be a few additional small / flat items included in the frame shipment.
When designing, my concerns are as follows:
1) Aesthetic / Design / Presentation Matters (How does the client feel when receiving / first seeing the box and when opening it)? Does it feel like Apple designed the box or someone who is figuring out how to shave every cent of cost out of the box?
2) Protection from shipping damage. Not only do I need to protect the frame from shipping damage, but I want a box that is sturdy enough that it doesn't arrive disfigured giving a poor initial impression.
3) Production cost: Being mindful of how expensive will each box (and possibly insert) be on a per-unit basis. This is not a high-profit margin frame (including shipping, it will retail for ~ $12 - $13), so I do have to be mindful and balance cost with #1 & #2.
4) Minimizing shipping costs: Making the most space-efficient box possible.
Initially, I thought a mailer box with a color-keyed insert may be my best option. I've attached a sample image titled "Box Aesthetic Example 1" that I like in terms of design, colors, etc. However, if I need to go the route of having a box with an insert (or possibly even EVA foam), I would like it to be seamless on top with thumb holes so clients can easily remove their new frame. Something like the attached image entitled "Seamless Insert with Fingerpull Cutouts Example 1".
Then, however, I came across a box that "appears" to have wide / thick sides that may be enough to provide sufficient protection to avoid shipping damage without having to add an insert into every box. Without being able to see the inside of the box, nor how the lid hinges, I am unsure though. Please see attached image entitled "Thick Side Box Example 1". Do you have any experience or insight into a box like this?
Please advise on if you provide these services, examples of your past designs/specs, and your cost structure.
