Concept-Driven Book Cover Design (Investigative Non-Fiction / Geopolitics)
Budget: $10 – $30 USD
I am commissioning a concept-led, typographically strong book cover for a serious investigative non-fiction book examining global power, oligarchy, war economies, sanctions, and modern neocolonial systems.
This project requires visual thinking, not decoration.
The cover should work on three levels:
Instant impact at thumbnail size
Symbolic depth on close inspection
Credibility on a physical bookshelf
Book Profile
Category: Investigative Non-Fiction / Global Politics
Mood: Dark, authoritative, restrained, intellectual
Comparable shelf: Political analysis, global affairs, investigative journalism
Audience: Academics, journalists, policy thinkers, politically aware readers
Creative Direction (Guidance, Not Limitation)
Designers are encouraged to propose a strong concept using one or more of the following approaches:
Symbolic abstraction (systems, power, hierarchy, control, networks)
Minimalist or brutalist composition
High-contrast or muted palettes (black, charcoal, off-white, deep red, metallic accents)
Editorial-style typography
Negative space and strong visual hierarchy
Avoid:
Stock-photo clichés
Over-illustration
Generic “corporate” layouts
Overused Canva aesthetics
Typography Expectations
Typography is critical.
Strong title treatment (custom or carefully selected type)
Clear hierarchy: title → subtitle → author
Kerning, tracking, and spacing must be intentional
Serif or sans-serif acceptable if conceptually justified
Subtitle must remain readable at Amazon thumbnail size
Format & Technical Specs
Trim size: To be confirmed (Amazon standard paperback)
Spine: Title + author (optimized for shelf visibility)
Back cover: Clean layout with space for blurb & barcode
Resolution: 300 DPI, CMYK for print, RGB for web
Bleed & margins: Print-ready
Deliverables
2–3 initial concept directions (distinct visual approaches)
Final front cover
Full wrap (front, spine, back)
Kindle / eBook cover
High-res print files
Editable source files (PSD / AI / INDD)
Web & promo variants
