I am after a book cover for my YA fiction novel. This is a story targeted at 13-25 year olds and dives into topics such as grief and self-harm, but has a positive message and ends on a high note. See the synopsis below. I am after something that is minimalist but still portrays the central idea of the book and draws your eye in, while keeping the age demographic in mind.

Synopsis

Katie and Kai were as close as two siblings could get; they were twins. Inseparable from birth, they protected each other fiercely, right up until the day Kai died. In an awful act of violence, Kai is taken away from Katie, murdered by the very step-father who swore to protect and love them. As Katie struggles to cope with the loss of her brother, her will to live slowly fades until she attempts to take her own life. Distraught and concerned about their daughter, her parents take charge of getting Katie’s life back on track, determined not to lose their only remaining child.

With regular sessions with a therapist scheduled and strict new rules from her parents, Katie makes a fresh start at life. No longer willing to put up with the shallow people she once considered her friends, Katie forms a new friendship with Alexander, a nerdy, reserved guy who manages to bring Katie out of her shell. Although it is difficult at first, given the rumours that spread about what Katie did, she slowly finds her rhythm and returns to the girl she used to be.

Katie agrees to let her friends throw her an extravagant birthday party for her sixteenth birthday, even allowing them to sneak in alcohol for the special occasion. With her parents temporarily out of the picture, the party gets wild, and during a drunken conversation with Alexander, Katie discovers that their friendship wasn’t a coincidence. Alexander admits that he was hired by Katie’s parents to watch over her and help her recover from what she did to herself, and what her step-father did to Kai.

Confronting her parents the next day, Katie presses them into admitting what they did. Feeling betrayed, Katie refuses to talk to Alexander, no longer believing that he truly cares for her at all. Leading up to the anniversary of Kai’s death, Katie begins to spiral again, struggling to cope on her own. After a difficult conversation with her therapist, Katie realises that she may have been harsh towards Alexander. On the anniversary of her brother’s death she confronts Alexander at the cemetery, finally forgiving him for his betrayal and welcoming his friendship back with open arms. After a difficult year, she finally feels confident that she is going to survive without her brother and is determined to make him proud.
