Budget: $250 – $750 USD
My goal is to develop a Transitional Housing and Support Facility for military veterans and their families, because the number of Homeless Veterans in the State of Kentucky; far exceed the number of Transitional Housing and Support Service Centers in the State, and that’s a big problem. There is an urgent need in the State of Kentucky for nonprofit Transitional Housing Facilities for Homeless Veterans, because we currently do not have enough here in our State. We don’t even have a Transitional Housing Facility for Homeless Veterans here in Somerset, and it takes almost 2-hours to drive to the nearest one. There are several buildings located in the downtown area of our city that are not being used, and I would like to apply for grant funding to establish a 30-70 single and family spaced private bedrooms for Male and Female Homeless Veterans and their families. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) currently offers Seventy-four dollars and eighty-two cents ($74.82) per day / per veteran through their Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Program, to fund community agencies that provide transitional housing and support services to military veterans who are experiencing homelessness. A 30-70 bed facility here in Somerset, Kentucky would not only create more jobs, but it could also easily generate more than a million dollars annually through the VA’s GPD Program. Operational costs, including salaries, can be funded by the GPD component.
As of January 2022; the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) posted in their statistics that the State of Kentucky has an estimated 447 military veterans who are currently experiencing homelessness on any given day. Furthermore, there are a growing number of women serving in the military and as they are exiting the military, they have become the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in the State.
