Improve speed and performance of wordpress website

My WordPress website is currently running a bit slow. Its PageSpeed Insights score is around 42 on mobile and 45 on desktop. I want to improve this score to around 85.
Sometimes the site runs smoothly, but at certain points it suddenly takes a few seconds to load. It looks like a heavy request might be triggering in the background, so this issue also needs to be identified and resolved as part of the performance optimization.
