Create Browser Extension That Takes Screenshots of User Selected Content
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
I'm seeking an experienced developer who can create a browser extension for both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
Detailed Requirements:
- The extension should allow users to select specific content within the browser by drawing a rectangle and then take a screenshot of that specified area within the web browser.
- A crucial feature the extension must have is the ability to save that screenshot as a .jpg file and then send the captured screenshot to a specific URL/IP Address for our web based application to process the image.

After installing, this extension places a button next to the address bar of the browser. When you click this button you are presented with multiple options on how you want to capture a screenshot. We only need functionality similar to the "Capture Selected Area" option. Once you click this, a transparent gray layer is overlayed on top of the browser content and the user can select an area by drawing a rectangle. Our extension must do the same.
After selecting the area, our extension should give the user 3 options: "Cancel", "Scan Card", and "Redo Selection". Cancel and Redo are self explanatory for how they should be processed. The "Scan Card" option should save the selection as a .jpg image file and then send the image through a post or similar call to a specified URL or IP address. At this point a new browser tab will be opened and we will refer the user to the Results.html page that has the results that our web app returns.
We already have the web app working as well as the results page, you will just need to send the image file to the appropriate place.
We have a current browser extension that is working but instead of taking a screenshot of a selected area, the current extension allows you to right click on an image and we send the image URL to our web app to process. We can provide the code for this extension as well as the package so you can install it and see how it is intended to work once you update to take a screenshot of a selected area.
Timeline:
- The project should ideally be completed within a month.
Required Skills and Experience:
Expertise in designing and developing browser extensions is a must. The ideal candidate should have a sound understanding of the different technical aspects of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Profound knowledge in JavaScript is also key for the successful completion of this project. Prior experience in similar projects will be a plus.
Clean code that will past the approval process from both Google and Microsoft is a must as this extension will be distributed through their extension stores.
All code must be original and written from scratch so that we can own the rights to this code.
