Chrome/Firefox Extension to query cross-domain web service

Need a v3 chrome extension that will display a popup with a textbox and a button.
Upon entering a value in the box and clicking the button, the extension will query a web service (cross-domain) with the value entered in the textbox and get a value from the service that will need to be inserted in the first textbox of the page currently open under the current tab (no matter the web site of this page).
