I need help with github

A consultant set up my software development environment with github over ten years ago. I'm only using git for backup/archive (I don't do anything fancy with branches, etc.). I've run into a problem with git that I don't know how to fix (I can no longer push my recent commits), so I need some specific technical help with that. I would also like some more general guidance about the best way to go forward.
