The Franklin Expedition, which set sail in 1845 to navigate the Northwest Passage, ended in tragedy as both ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, became stranded in the harsh Arctic climate. Theories about what happened to the crew range from starvation and scurvy to lead poisoning and cannibalism, but according to Inuit legend, the crew angered a malevolent spirit known as the Tuurngait, which drove them to madness and despair before taking their lives.
