Foreign Film
Budget: $10 – $30 USD
Select a full-length feature film that has been written and produced outside of the United States and is set in another country, for example, a “French” film or a “Chinese” film. The movie that you choose should be set in a country that you are not familiar with, and have no ties to. Unless the film is set in, for instance, England or Australia, the film must be in another language and it will need to have English subtitles. The purpose is to observe the cultural context, values, behaviors, interactions between people, and ways of communicating in the film, based on some of the concepts we have learned. The movie you choose can be a comedy, romance, adventure, thriller, historical, or whatever you prefer.
You will write a three-page analysis (double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point font) of the movie, including:
Why did you choose this particular movie?
A (very) brief summary of the movie…what was the movie about?
What did you observe in the movie that is influenced by culture? How can you relate what you saw in the movie to some of the concepts we learned in class?
What cultural differences did you observe? Assess these differences from the American culture as your point of reference. Did you find any of the behaviors, ways of communicating, etc. “unusual” or seemingly “strange” as compared to what you are accustomed to?
Would you ever want to live in the country where the movie was set? Why or why not?
