OPEN Change from employment by German company to working as contractor to UK-based company

I am looking into the opportunity to work as a contractor for a UK-based company and still residing in Berlin. I own a residence permit that says erwerbstätigkeit erlaubt, I am currently employed by a German company, and I have worked in Germany for 5 years now. I wonder if I must change my current permit to something else? For example, self-employment or freelance. I will appreciate further information, steps that I have to take and any implications to this.
Please be based in Germany and have experience with German bureaucracy.
