Foundation Design & Soil Investigation

Job ID: 37953237

Budget: $10 – $30 USD

We conducted a plate load test at a site using a 300 mm plate, following BS 1377-9 standards, which specify that the soil's bearing capacity is determined at a 15% plate dia penetration.
However, achieving this level of penetration with compacted material and gravel proves challenging using standard reaction loads, such as a loaded truck or other heavy equipment available at site.
Our client has provided us with the bearing capacity and designed settlement values which used in their project calculations for our verification purposes and decision rule statement.
They have requested us to verify these values and issue a compliance statement indicating whether these values pass or fail at site.

It's important to note that, as per BS 1377-9, we are unable to achieve the failure load specified in the standard.

We are seeking advice from qualified engineers on how to accurately verify the provided bearing capacity and settlement values, considering the difficulties in achieving the specified penetration rate.
Additionally, guidance on issuing a compliance statement under these circumstances would be greatly appreciated.

The data which requires decision statement is as below:
Max applied load on plate:800 kPa

Max plate settlement : 6

Plate Settlement at 600kPa is 4 mm

Allowable design stress is : 200kPa

Allowable foundation settlement is 25mm
Safety factor is: 3
