GIS Map Creation for Sustainable Development Goals

Job ID: 39378680

Budget: €8 – €30 EUR

Assignment – Making Maps

Leveraging GIS to examine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Purposes:

Make three maps related to the related SDG you are interested in using GIS

Method:

Use the spatial analysis tools you learned and the data you downloaded to display some results relevant to SDGs, such as environmental pollution distribution, traffic volume distribution, road network distribution, land use and land cover changes during multiple years, etc.

Data Sources:

You could use the lab data, but you need to do something differently from the lab handouts. Then, analyze your results or impacts related to SDGs. For example, how does your findings complement certain goals of SDGs?

You could also use other data sources, such as:

“GIS at UCD and on the Web: Find Spatial Data & Other Datasets for Ireland”
BBbike for land use and land cover
USGS for land cover
Digimap
Ordnance Survey
Socioeconomic data in the Unite States from US Census Bureau
Google Dataset Search

The course also provided sample data you can download from Brightspace. They are the datasets in New York City include:

Mobile monitoring air quality, asthma rates, land use, median income, traffic, climate, population, tree species, census tract, and Digital Surface Model.
Remember what kind of data you want to use: vector data (e.g., shapefile), raster data (e.g., tif) or other data formats.

You are also encouraged to download data from any other places (not limited to Ireland) for any type of data (e.g., traffic, air pollution, flood areas, etc., ) that you are interested in.

Submit:

At least, THREE high-quality maps with all necessary map elements (e.g., legend, north arrow, and scale bar)
For each map, write about 300 words (10% of fluctuation) of explanation, such as:
What does map stand for?
How does it relate to SDGs?
What datasets and methods have you applied?
What are the potential limitations of the map?
Submit ONE document including all maps you make and save it as a PDF file to submit: Last Name, First Name-Assignment 2 (e.g., Deily Tom-Assignment 2)

Map design is subjective. If you want to know how to make maps step by step, you can refer to this video.
