Analysis of Welsh National Landscapes for 30by30
Budget: £750 – £1,500 GBP
This project aims to evaluate the potential contribution of Wales' National Landscapes (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Parks) towards the 30x30 conservation target. This initiative seeks to protect 30% of land by 2030 to preserve biodiversity and natural habitats. The study will involve mapping and analyzing existing protected areas, priority habitats, ancient woodlands, and other ecologically significant regions within these landscapes. It will mostly use datasets held on DataMapWales
Objectives:
Identify areas within Wales’ National Landscapes that have the potential to contribute to the 30x30 target.
Methodology: The project will utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to map potential 30x30 areas based on criteria such as designated sites (SSSIs, SACs, SPAs), priority habitats, ancient woodlands, and deep peat. This analysis will be used to estimate the percentage of land within National Landscapes that can realistically contribute to the 30x30 goal without requiring significant land-use changes.
Expected Outcomes:
A comprehensive map of potential 30x30 areas within Wales' National Landscapes.
A detailed report highlighting key areas for conservation, challenges, and recommendations for achieving the 30x30 target.
