ESP32-FPGA IoT Module Development

Budget: $25 – $50 USD

I am building a compact measurement and control module that marries an ESP32 with a small FPGA. The FPGA will handle real-time signal processing, while the ESP32 aggregates the results, pushes them to the cloud over MQTT, and serves a simple web dashboard.

Core scope
– Mixed-sensor support: the front-end must accept both analog and digital sensors.
– Analog path: implement on-FPGA filtering before results reach the ESP32.
– Digital path: straight-through capture with room for future logic extensions.
– Two-layer PCB integrating the ESP32, FPGA and sensor interface components.
– SPI-based hand-shake between the two chips.

Key tasks
• Design the sensor input circuitry and full schematic.
• Write and verify VHDL/Verilog blocks for filtering, counters and basic event flags.
• Develop ESP32 firmware (ESP-IDF or Arduino) for SPI control, MQTT publishing and the web dashboard.
• Lay out the board (KiCad, Altium or similar), ready for fabrication.
• Produce a concise protocol document so future firmware can speak to the FPGA easily.
• Demonstrate the system running with at least one analog and one digital sensor—screen capture or short video is fine.

Deliverables
1. Schematic files and 2-layer PCB source.
2. FPGA RTL source and testbench.
3. ESP32 firmware with build instructions.
4. Communication protocol documentation.
5. Demo video or capture proving end-to-end data flow via MQTT.

Acceptance
I will review the HDL simulation results, compile the board in my chosen EDA tool, flash the firmware, and verify live sensor data arriving at an MQTT broker and appearing on the dashboard. Payment is released once these steps reproduce successfully on my bench.
