Eliminate Creaking Timber Joist Floor
Budget: $250 – $750 AUD
I have a 10–30 year-old residential house where an area (size of 2 sqm) on the first-floor chipboard (now overlaid with glued-and-screwed ply) creaks loudly every time we step on it. Because the new ply actually amplified the noise, I’m convinced the problem sits deeper—most likely within the timber-joist sub-floor.
What I need from you:
• Pinpoint the exact source of movement or friction inside the joist structure.
• Propose and/or carry out a permanent fix—whether that means shimming, adding blocking, re-fastening, or any specialist technique you’ve successfully used on timber joists before.
I’ll clear furniture, lift carpets, and give full access to the area. You’ll supply materials you prefer working with, bring your own tools, and dispose of off-cuts. Photographic evidence of the issue and the completed repair will form part of the sign-off so we both stay on the same page.
If you’ve solved stubborn squeaks in timber-framed floors before, let me know how you tackled them and how soon you can start.
