Prepare Car Firmware USB Update

I have a firmware-update .bin file that needs to be loaded from a micro-USB stick into my car’s touch-screen head unit. The only snag is the file name: whenever I copy it over, Windows warns that the “name is too long,” and if I shorten it myself the car refuses to recognise the update.
Here’s where things stand:
• The file is definitely a firmware update, not ordinary data.
• It must boot directly from the USB so the car can flash the touch screen.
• I already tried renaming it following a few forum posts, but afterwards the unit wouldn’t detect the file at all.
