Stainless Steel Access Hatch FEA Analysis
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
Stress Analysis (FEA) for 3m × 3m Floor Stainless Steel Access Hatch — 2-Leaf, Pedestrian Load, Through-Bolted to Concrete
Project Description
I need a structural engineer/FEA specialist to perform a full stress and deflection analysis for a floor-mounted stainless steel access hatch, 3,000 mm × 3,000 mm, two-leaf door, designed for pedestrian traffic. The hatch frame is through-bolted to concrete. Deliver a sealed, professional report suitable for consultant submission.
Scope of Work
1. Model & Assumptions
Build a 3D FEA model (shell/solid where appropriate) of:
Two leaf plates/panels, hinges, latches, frame, and stiffeners.
Through-bolts/anchors to concrete
Materials: Stainless steel 304/316L ; welds per AWS D1.6 or EN ISO 5817 quality level.
Include realistic boundary conditions for the frame bearing on concrete and through-bolt restraint.
2. Loads & Combinations (confirm during kickoff)
Uniform pedestrian live load: target 5.0 kN/m² (or 4.8 kPa/100 psf).
Concentrated point load: 1.5–2.0 kN applied at worst-case locations (panel midspan, near hinges/latch).
Impact/dynamic factor: 1.3 (or per code).
Self-weight and any gasket compression loads.
Optional: serviceability combinations including partial safety factors per chosen standard.
3. Checks Required
Deflection criteria: target L/250 (span of each leaf) or ≤ 5 mm at service load—whichever is more stringent.
Stress/strength: von Mises vs. yield/ultimate with appropriate partial factors.
Hinge/latch hardware: local stresses and fastener checks.
Weld sizing at stiffeners and frame connections.
Anchors/through-bolts to concrete: shear, tension, pry-out, edge distance, spacing—design per selected code
Factor of Safety: clearly reported for all critical components.
4. Standards (pick one family and stay consistent)
Option A (Eurocode):
Actions: EN 1991-1-1 (imposed loads)
Stainless steel design: EN 1993-1-4
Welds: EN 1993-1-8 / ISO 5817
Anchors into concrete: EN 1992-4 (or ETA/EAD method)
Option B (US):
Loads: ASCE 7-22 (100 psf pedestrian)
Stainless steel: AISC Design Guide 27 (or similar)
Welds: AWS D1.6
Anchors: ACI 318-19 Chapter 17
Deliverables
FEA Report (PDF) including:
Executive summary with pass/fail vs. criteria.
Modeling assumptions, mesh metrics, and boundary conditions.
Load cases & combinations table.
Color plots: stress, deflection, reaction forces, and anchor demands.
Bill of key section sizes/thicknesses with optimization suggestions (plate thickness, stiffener layout).
Anchor schedule (type, diameter, embedment, spacing) meeting edge/spacings.
Deflection & vibration commentary for pedestrian comfort/trip safety.
Native model files (e.g., ANSYS/ABAQUS/SolidWorks Simulation) + DXF/DWG markups of any recommended changes.
Calculation sheets (Excel/Mathcad/Python) for anchors/welds (not just FEA screenshots).
Inputs I Will Provide
2D/3D drawings of hatch (DWG/STEP if available)
Proposed material grade (304/316L), plate & frame thicknesses
Hinge and latch datasheets
Proposed anchor model (e.g., M12/M16 ETA anchor) and concrete strength class
Any consultant-required format
Acceptance Criteria
Meets the stated deflection limit and stress/FoS per chosen standard.
Anchors verified with edge/spacing checks and interaction ratios ≤ 1.0.
Clear, reproducible calculations and editable source files.
Nice-to-Haves
Alternative weight/cost optimization option (stiffener re-layout vs. plate thickness).
Brief installation note for concrete edge distances and seal seating.
Required Skills
Structural engineering (PE/Chartered preferred)
Nonlinear/linear FEA of plates, welds, and bolted connections
Anchor design to ACI 318-19 Ch.17 or EN 1992-4
Familiarity with stainless steel behavior and weld design
What to Include in Your Bid
1. The standards you intend to use and why.
2. Example report for a similar hatch/cover/door job.
3. Proposed deflection criterion and load set.
4. Software & deliverable formats.
5. Timeline and fixed price (separate base fee + optional optimization).
Budget
Please propose a fixed price for:
Base analysis & report
Optional optimization iteration
