Finite Element Method (FEM) Homework Assignment – Simulation & Optimization of Chair Backrest
Project Description:
I am looking for a qualified mechanical engineer or FEM expert to complete a university homework assignment using the Finite Element Method (FEM).
This is not a simple mesh task – the work involves CAD-based FEA modeling, simulation, optimization, hand calculation, and technical documentation.
Project Details:
You will be working on the backrest of an aluminum chair, provided in .STEP CAD format. The following tasks are required:
Task 1: Model Setup
Create a 2D PSHELL model (12 mm thickness) using provided CAD data.
Apply correct mesh (quality-controlled, <1% trias, <15,000 elements).
Set proper boundary conditions and two load cases (leaning & sitting forces).
Determine the weight of the backrest and comment on mesh, load, constraints.
Task 2: Simulation
Run FEA for both load cases.
Plot displacement and von Mises stress.
Identify max values and their locations.
Evaluate the safety factor against yielding.
Task 3: Hand Calculation
Simplified hand calc of deformation using TM2 approach.
Compare hand result to FEA result, explain differences.
Task 4: Optimization
Redesign the backrest to be at least 20% lighter while maintaining:
Material (EN AW-6082 Aluminum)
Same or lower deformations
Safety factor > 1
Plot new displacements and stress distribution.
Task 5: Load Capacity
Calculate max load until:
a) deformation = 3 mm
b) safety factor = 1
Final Deliverables:
PowerPoint Presentation with:
Clear, self-explanatory slides
Sections for each task
Visualizations (plots, images, values)
Executable .fem files (for each task)
No .hm, .mvw, .h3d, etc.
Optional: Excel sheet showing model versions or parameter changes.
Tools Required:
HyperMesh & HyperView (preferred)
SolidWorks/CATIA (for CAD editing, if needed)
FEA knowledge, preferably academic background
Fluent in technical reporting in English
