Your report should include the following sections:
1- Balance Sheet: Prepare a report in which you draw conclusions about the link between your firm’s Business Strategy Analysis (refer to the 10-K reports). Explain how the company uses its resources (Assets) and how those resources are financed (liabilities) to expand its business operations over the last 5 years. Are the resources and finances aligned with the firm’s strategy? These questions are related to your analysis in Case Report 1.
2- Income Statement: Include a section in your report where you draw conclusions about the most important service or product for your company. This can be analyzed in terms of margins, sales, volume, and in terms of those product or services that provide or increase substantially the firm’s profits or gross margin. Have past strategic decisions translated into a more profitable company? Have these decisions increased sales, inventories and account receivables in a similar fashion? Has business operations improved? Have their products and services improved compared to the firm’s competition?
3- Basics of Analysis (Common Size Analysis or Vertical and Horizontal Analysis (VAHA) The BS will identify which questions should be answered by your analysis. List the 10 most important questions that arise from your review of the Vertical Analysis and Horizontal Analysis you performed (see the excel tabs named Vertical Analysis and Horizontal Analysis). Answer each of the 10 questions that you identified. You may refer to MANAGEMENT’S DISCUSSION AND ANALYSIS OF FINANCIAL RESULTS OF OPERATIONS inside SEC 10-K reports. Note: which questions are relevant for each company can be different; use the BS analysis to drive the Q&A process.
4- Ratio Analysis and Interpretation: Using the excel tabs Ratios-avg or Ratios-end, evaluate each of the ratios and explain whether/if/how each ratio affects your conclusion about your firm’s economic position. See the example of EXXON MOBILE XLS.
5- Conclusions: Summarize your primary conclusions here in this section. You should include a discussion of whether/if/how the strategic decisions made by the firm are evidenced in the financials.
