Project Overview
This final project for NSP655 – Network Servers and Peripherals requires you to design and configure a fully functional virtualized Linux network environment using VMware Workstation Pro 17.5/17.6 and Fedora 38 virtual machines. You will build two systems—a Linux server and a Linux client—with specific networking and service configurations. The project demonstrates your ability to deploy, configure, and integrate core network services in a controlled virtual lab.
Key Requirements
✅ Networking:
Two virtual NICs per VM: one for NAT internet access, one for a host‑only private network.
Server provides DHCP on the private network (e.g., 192.168.10N.0/24) while the client obtains its IP from the server.
Proper hostname assignments (Projserver.nspdomN.local and Projclient.nspdomN.local).
✅ Server Configuration:
Install and configure DHCP, NFS, Samba, DNS (forward and reverse zones), Sendmail/Dovecot (mail), and Apache (web server with a custom welcome page).
Create specific local user accounts and enable services like VNC and printer sharing (CUPS).
Configure firewall rules allowing only key services (SSH, HTTPS, POP3S, SMTP, DNS, NFSv4, IPP, VNC, Samba) and implement SNAT for internet access.
✅ Client Configuration:
Mount Samba and NFS shares (automatically via fstab) and schedule backups via cron.
Configure VNC viewer script with SSH tunneling for remote access.
Connect to shared network printer and set up Evolution email client for SMTP/POP3S.
✅ Bonus Challenge:
Install and configure Roundcube webmail on the server and test web‑based email access from the client.
