"Sonder" Burberry x Shiota Fashion Portfolio
Budget: £20 – £250 GBP
Project Type: Fashion Collection Portfolio
Project Title: “Sonder”
Designer: Gabriel Aurelia Sitanggang
Brand Fusion: Burberry × Chiharu Shiota
Overview:
“Sonder” is a conceptual fashion project that will be presented as a fashion collection portfolio. The goal is to visually merge Burberry’s structured British heritage with Chiharu Shiota’s emotional, thread-based artistry, translating the philosophical idea of Sonder—the realization that every individual leads a life as vivid and complex as one’s own—into wearable design.
Concept Summary:
The collection reflects the invisible threads that connect human lives, represented through the interplay of structure and fragility, order and emotion. Burberry’s refined tailoring provides form and discipline, while Shiota’s expressive red thread installations inspire deconstruction, transparency, and layered texture.
Design Direction:
Reinterpret Burberry’s trench and tailoring silhouettes with artistic distortion and thread manipulation.
Integrate red thread motifs, layering, and transparency to symbolize emotional connection.
Combine structured craftsmanship with abstract, poetic experimentation.
Color Palette (Pantone References):
Deep Red (200 C) – emotion and connection.
Earth Brown (4635 C) – grounding tone inspired by Burberry heritage.
Midnight Blue (2965 C) – introspection and depth.
Supported by Beige (7527 C) and Cool Gray (5 C) for balance and neutrality.
Deliverable:
A professionally designed fashion portfolio that includes:
Concept statement and visual story.
Moodboard and concept board.
Colour chart with Pantone references.
Fabric chart (choose a few from sketchbook pages)
Development page/s (design sketches)
Final collection lineup (already given in the sketchbook pages)
Outcome:
A visually cohesive and emotionally resonant portfolio that communicates both artistic narrative and technical development. The Sonder collection should feel poetic, structured, and deeply human—a reflection of how fashion can express the unseen connections between people.
