Around 10 years ago an overly-intricate excel model was developed by a third party. This model had external references to update information within the company intranet. When I used the model I broke the links. Ever since that time Excel spreadsheets I use seemingly self-generate external references to addresses within the intranets of other companies I work with.
For example I can create a new model in Excel from scratch. Send it to a third party and the file they receive immediately has errors prompting the user to find external references. It is as if hidden code is is writing external references into these spreadsheets. And like a virus it self replicates into everyone's systems.
The code seems to do nothing else. Just create external code references.

Find the culprit and determine a solution so I can cleanse my files and stop this occurring in the future.
