Michael Wilmington, critic for the Chicago Tribune, describes The Third man as "a rich moody masterpiece of gilt, love and redemption" (par.3). More than just a great scripts on the printed page, this film tells the story through the mise en scene, all of the cinematic elements that add to the story and are used realistically and symbolically to create the illusion of reality. Not only do these techniques communicate information, but they also affect our emotions and interpretation of the events, the characters, and the situations. These elements include: setting, music, sound effects, clothing, makeup, hairstyle, props, camera angles, lighting and shadows, and black and white vs. color film stock.
