Budget: €50 – €70 EUR
Students must collect and present data (via a table and/or graph) which
details all media content*, with a specific emphasis on news content,
consumed by the student over a consecutive five-day period.
This must also include:
• At least one broadsheet (e.g. Irish Times) and one tabloid
newspaper (e.g. The Irish Daily Star) over the course of the data
collection period.
• One talk/news-based radio programme (e.g. Drivetime on RTÉ
Radio 1, The Last Word on Today FM, Liveline on RTÉ).
• At least one news bulletin on radio and at least one news
programme (e.g. Six-One) on television.
The student must also submit a review of the data of approximately
1,000 words. This review should include some critical analysis of the
data collected in relation to key concepts that have emerged to date
during the module, as well as reflection on the findings.
Students should include (but not necessarily limit
themselves to) the following concepts/areas in their analysis:
• News media and public interest/public opinion
• The political economy of the mass media
• The media as a reflection/representation of society.
The review must demonstrate engagement with critical reading material
related to the module, and evidence of this must be demonstrated
through correct citation and a completed bibliography.
At least four academic sources (books, journal articles, etc. ) must be
