non contact distance measurement

I am working on a project to build a tool to use for noncontact distance measurement. The plan is to use a optical flow sensor to detect and measure movement. somehow use that information to compile the total length of a object. The project is based out of Calgary Alberta and some on site work would be needed. great short term contract employment opportunity!
