Work design and measurement
Budget: $10 – $30 USD
Consider a cashier workstation at a supermarket. The workstation compromises one worker who is responsible for scanning purchased items, producing a receipt, accepting cash or cards, and packing purchased goods. The packing material is plastic/paper bags of different sizes. The workstation also includes a cashier machine, a bar code reader, a credit card machine, and a computer connected to the warehouse management system.
You are requested to design the workstation by applying the concepts and tools discussed throughout the semester in this course. Specifically, your design and presentation should include:
1. Operation description and analysis to describe the work being performed and the physical layout of the workstation (use the tools you learned during the lectures, e.g., operations process chart, flow process chart, flow diagram, etc.)
2. Worker-machine charts
3. Calculation of RWL and rest allocation.
4. Two-hand process charts
5. All the tools and equipment needed to perform the described tasks. Detailed drawings using drafting software are required showing all workstation dimensions based on the anthropometric data.
6. Consideration of the 14 guidelines for design.
