coal-fired power plant with post-combustion CO2 capture : Techno economic assessment
1. Overview
• Draw a flow diagram showing how decarbonisation works
• Develop a spreadsheet model which reproduces the calculations of CN4 (I suggest that you use the LCOE template, at least initially and adjust the cell values to allow for a phased construction period)
• Calculate the CO2 capture cost using the method of the article
• Calculate the impact on the levelised cost of electricity for Medupi (assume that the present levelised cost is R800 per MWh)
• Now calculate the additional cost for the consumer assuming that the project will proceed, reporting the value in R/kWh (you are probably paying about R2 per kWh at present
• Finally, calculate the additional cost of electricity in R/kWh should Eskom be required to implement CCS across all its CO2- generating units (assume that the cost of carbon capture is identical across all its power stations and linearly scale the cost from your studyon a single Medupi unit).

2. Requirements

the presentation file and the spreadsheet model containing all your results including the COE (cost of electricity) with and without carbon capture, and the CO2 capture cost. You do not need to calculate the NPV and IRR since there is no revenue associated with the additional expense. Please use the templates provided in each case and follow the examples of the previous years.

The report must cover the following:

• The base-case LCOE for Medupi Power station
• The impact of CCS on Eskom costs and on consumer charges, based on your results for the analysis as outlined in Section 1
• A sensitivity analysis for the CCS unit indicating the main factors to which the COE will be sensitive
• Recommendations to the Board of Eskom, who will need to consider whether to proceed with the project.

3. Requirements
You must also prepare a word document (< 25 pages) covering the main results of the assignment, as per the examples from previous years and using the presentation template.
