In a material transfer unit in an automated factory, a conveyor, a DC motor, and an incremental encoder are used to move objects onto a platform in the unit. When an object reaches the platform, the conveyor stops and the object's height is measured with a laser triangulation unit.
An object is ramped up from rest to a steady speed of V m/s on the conveyor, then decelerated to zero with the same magnitude of acceleration using a DC motor and a gear unit with a step-down speed ratio of r = 4. The entire process takes T = 5s, the acceleration time is T = 1s, and the displacement is equal to the conveyor belt's length.
Figure 2 depicts a schematic representation of the system as well as the speed profile of the object. In each servo loop, an optical incremental encoder provides position and velocity feedback.
