Lean Manufacturing Project
Budget: £20 – £250 GBP
Lean manufacturing can be said to have developed from the essential work on Quality systems both for the customer and for the producer. In this coursework you need to look at one company within the following industries as a case study and critically evaluate the effectiveness of how lean and quality techniques are applied.
(a) Automotive Industry
(b) Aerospace Industry
(c) Food Industry
(d) The industry of your choice (this need to be agreed with tutor by 25th of March 2020)
In your report you should include evidence related to the areas such as:
• a critical evaluation of the options that link design, manufacture and setup
It’s also essential that you show clear understanding of manufacturing wastes and how the company reduce waste by applying Lean methods.
Part (II):
Within your case study, evaluate how Lean mindset in manufacturing is recently moving towards digitalised Lean and critically evaluate how this will establish a pathway towards Industry 4.0 goals.
Part (III):
In this part you need to describe a production line within your case study. You need to use Simul8 to demonstrate and validate this system.
You have then to modify the product with a suggested improvement from part (I) and part (II) which must entail changes to your system (e.g. a new machine, extra resources, automation, etc) and demonstrate the effect of the change using Simul8 to modify the system. You need to critically evaluate the model and prove its effectiveness.
Part (IV).
The aim of this part is to make a predictive model for the presented case study by using artificial intelligent model in MATLAB. You can consider the output/result data from Simul8 in Part (III) as and input data for your model. Critically evaluate the results and show how it does improve the effectiveness of the process.
Your Evaluation and report should be 2000 words with ±10%.
You need to submit three files as part of this assignment:
1- report (2000 words ±10%) via TurnitIn
2- Simul8 file
3- MATLAB file
The word count is stated on assignment brief, if you want to include any tables, and appendices these should be at the end of your assignment after the Bibliography
Remember, that your report (case study) should not simply present the basic knowledge of lean and quality techniques, rather a critical evaluation of their application.
