Familiarisation with the AWBM model
1.1 AWBM Familiarisation Activity – Jardine River
1. For the available data from 1974 to 1989, what is the average annual rainfall, evapotranspiration and observed runoff
for the Jardine River?

How to disaggregate average monthly values of the evapotranspiration (from BOM)
Once you have your average monthly values for evapotranspiration for the BOM website, you will
need to convert (ie. disaggregate) this into a file of daily values to cover the full simulation period
required by the assignment.
Option 1: Create a file in Excel with 2 columns: the date (month, year) and the average monthly
ET. This can then be imported into the River Analysis Package (from eWater Toolkit)and
disaggregated:
1. Select TSM (Time Series Manager)
2. Select Time Step
3. Open your excel file with the monthly values (Note: RAP more readily accepts excel files
saved in .xls formats or .csv files).
4. Select the time step you wish to disaggregate to (ie. daily)
5. Select the appropriate disaggregation option. "Value of the original time step" will return the
same values for each day of the month. "Value per new time step" will divide the original
value equally between days in the month.
6. Save your file.
Option 2: the disaggregation can be completed entirely within Excel. the most efficient approach
is to use a lookup table and the "vlookup" function.
1. Create a column of dates (daily time step) for the entire simulation period. (Create the first
couple of dates and then drag and fill for an many years as needed.)
2. Create an array to one side that contains the month (as a number) and the daily ET value for
that month.
3. Use the "vlookup" function to identify the appropriate value from the array for that particular
day. The "month" function can be used to identify the month for that date (use within your
vlookup function). See picture below for a starting point. The cell can then be filled down for
all dates. Make sure you use absolute and relative cell references as needed in your formula
1. Overview
Part A is designed to test your achievement of course objective 1 focussing on Surface Water Issues in
Australia.
Part A is worth 50 marks (5% of the total course marks).
2. Before attempting Part A
Work through the course materials (StudyBook, lecture) for Module 1.
3. Online Discussion Forum (50 Marks)
Students are required to participate in an on-line discussions based around Module 1 Surface
Water Issues in Australia. You are required to select from one of the topics below and
undertake some targeted research to develop a response to the topic. You are encouraged to
use the course readings for Module 1 as well as source additional material from both learned
publications and on-line websites.
This task is intended to assess your learning against Course Objective 1 and build your
knowledge of the water industry in Australia and some of the key challenges you may
address in your professional career.
4. Topics – Select one
Topic 1: Water Use
Uses of water can be broadly defined in a number of different ways. Provide brief
definitions and examples of the following terms: “extractive use”, “on-site use” and “instream, or flow use”. What are the key challenges Australia faces in extracting and using
water from rivers? What do you think Australia should (or should not) do to address
these challenges and why?
Topic 2: Water Scarcity
How is water scarcity defined? Provide a brief statement of the expected scarcity of
water on a global scale over the next 50 years. What are the key challenges facing
Australia relating to water supply in the future? What do you think Australia should (or
should not) do to address the challenges associated with water scarcity and why?
Topic 3: Drought
