composite design

Job ID: 30980353

Budget: $10 – $30 USD

1. For the floor layout with column positions as shown in Figure B3.1 in Darko’s book (ignore
the given dimensions), working in a group of 2 students each (group task):

a) Decide on your new proposed dimensions for the layout.
b) Decide on two (2) possible (Option 1 and Option 2) arrangements of beams (primary
and secondary) and composite slabs and their chosen positions (provide sketches).
c) Decide and/assume your permanent and variable loadings as well as all other design
criteria (material strengths, safety factors, etc.) and a type of profiled steel decking (list
them).

2. Perform the design of (individual task):
a) the composite slab during construction and composite stages (each student adopting
one of the layouts decided in 1b)). Adopt the same profiled steel deck in both options
with changing slab thickness perhaps.
b) the secondary composite beam during construction and composite stages (each
student adopting one of the layouts decided in 1b)).

3. Compare the results for the 2 design options (Option 1 and Option 2) in terms of (group
task):
i. Secondary beam design (include shear comparison of the total number of shear
studs).
ii. Composite slab design.
Among items to be compared include beam sizes, composite slab thickness, total
concrete volume, total self-weight of secondary beams and total no. of shear studs for
the whole layout.

a) Prepare a report complete with the following:
i. Executive summary (group task).
ii. Introduction (group task).
iii. Project descriptions and outcomes (group task).
iv. Task distribution (group task).
v. The proposed layout options (Option 1 and Option B) (group task).
vi. Design criteria ((group task).
vii. Design calculations & sketches (showing slab and beam section and details).
➢ Student 1: a. Composite Slab & b. Secondary Composite Beam (individual task).
➢ Student 2: a. Composite Slab & b. Secondary Composite Beam (individual task).
viii. Provide a table of comparison of the compared items (group task).
ix. Discussion of results and comparison (group task).
x. List all learning points from the project (individual task).
xi. Conclusions (group task).
Note: Bonus points: Bonus points will be given to the group that include composite columns
design and also comparison in the project.
