Structural Approval for Solar Roof
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
I’m adding a solar array to my residential home and need a licensed structural engineer to confirm the roof can safely handle the additional dead and live loads. The roof is finished in asphalt shingles, and I can supply a truss drawing and two other truss drawings I created since I don't have the original drawing from 1984, so you may need to derive or verify any missing data. I also have the solar panel specs to determine how much load will be on the roof.
Scope of work
• Review the available drawings and any photos or dimensions I provide.
• Calculate gravity, wind, and snow loads for the planned solar panel layout.
• Identify any reinforcement requirements, if needed, with clear notes I can give to my installer.
• Issue a stamped letter/report and accompanying load-calculation sheets suitable for my local permitting office (PDF submission).
I’m looking for an engineer currently registered to do work in the state of Michigan and who can turn this around quickly and answer minor follow-up questions from the building department if they arise.
