Embedded Systems Engineer Needed for Underwater ROV (Hardware + Firmware + PCB Design)

Job ID: 40307293

Budget: $30 – $250 CAD

We are seeking an experienced Electronics and Embedded Systems Engineer to design the hardware and embedded firmware for a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) used in underwater inspection and operations. This is a highly technical engineering project, and we are looking for someone with strong experience in robotics, embedded systems, and PCB design.

The mechanical design of the ROV will be provided separately. The main objective is to develop a complete electronics and control system architecture that is ready for prototyping and manufacturing.

The scope of work includes designing the overall electronic system architecture, defining communication interfaces, and developing system-level structure. The selected engineer will design the main controller board using a suitable microcontroller platform such as STM32, ESP32, or ARM-based systems. The work also includes developing the thruster motor control system, integrating sensors such as depth sensors, IMU, temperature sensors, and leak detection systems, as well as implementing a camera/video interface. Additionally, the communication system between the ROV and the surface control station (via tether using Ethernet or serial communication) must be designed, along with a reliable power management and distribution system.

The project also requires complete PCB design, including schematic development, PCB layout, component selection, Bill of Materials (BOM), and manufacturing files such as Gerbers and drill files.

On the software side, the engineer will develop embedded firmware for motor control, sensor data acquisition, communication with the surface station, and basic system monitoring and safety features such as fail-safe mechanisms and watchdog systems.

Deliverables include system architecture design, complete electronic schematics, PCB design files and manufacturing outputs, BOM, embedded firmware source code, and detailed technical documentation.

Required skills include experience in robotics or ROV systems, PCB design using tools such as Altium or KiCad, embedded programming in C/C++, and strong knowledge of microcontrollers such as STM32, ESP32, or ARM Cortex platforms. Familiarity with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, and Ethernet is also required.

Candidates with experience in underwater systems, video transmission, robotic control systems, or power electronics will be preferred.

This is a serious engineering project, and we are looking for professionals who can contribute at a system level and provide well-thought-out technical solutions. Please include relevant past projects, portfolio, or GitHub links in your proposal.
