We are a research team working on building a wearable glove that translates Arabic Sign Language into text, with camera-based recognition planned as a future phase. Our team includes high school students and two researchers experienced in quantitative research methodology — but no one on our team has hardware/electronics building experience. We're looking for a freelancer who can act as a hands-on mentor for the hardware and coding side, not just a builder — someone who will walk us through each step and explain it, since we're complete beginners in this specific area.
Phase 1 scope (this posting):
Guide us through wiring a basic glove prototype: flex sensors + IMU connected to a microcontroller (Arduino/ESP32 or your recommendation)
Get the hardware reading clean, reliable sensor data
Basic coding to turn that raw data into recognised output for a small set of signs (a handful of Arabic Sign Language letters/words as a starting vocabulary)
Teach us why each step works as we go
What we're looking for:
Electrical/embedded systems engineer experienced with wearable sensors and microcontrollers
Comfortable with regular video calls (Zoom or your preference) — we want to be present and learning during the build, not just receiving a final product
Patient, clear communicator — please assume zero prior electronics/hardware knowledge on our end
Available for check-in calls (weekly or bi-weekly, flexible) across a 1-month timeline

High school student researchers
Two research team members experienced in quantitative research design and data analysis (they'll handle the study design and testing methodology once the hardware works)
No engineering background on the team — this is the gap we need filled

Milestone-based, paid hourly within the $25–$40/hr range
