Linear Power Supply Design

Linear power supply design for up to 24 volts(depending on input voltage and linear regulator selected) and up to 6 amps or output current(series pass transistor(s)?) with as little heat dissipation as possible. The biggest factor for success will be low heat(low enough that a hobbyist can build it) and low noise. A detailed conversation should be the first step.
