1. Overview
This project will use Simulink to simulate different cell balancing methods in a battery pack. The purpose is to compare methods such as passive balancing (resistive shunt) and active balancing (switched capacitor, inductor-based, and DC-DC) to improve the lifetime and performance of batteries.
2. Objectives
■ Build a Simulink model of a multi-cell battery pack.
■ Implement several balancing strategies.
■ Compare performance in terms of energy efficiency, balancing speed, and battery lifetime.
■ Provide simple outputs and plots to show differences between methods.
3. Scope
■ Battery pack: series of Li-ion cells (e.g., 12s).
■ Cell model: simple equivalent circuit (voltage source, resistor, RC element).
■ Balancing methods: passive shunt, switched capacitor, inductor-based, and DC-DC.
■ Simulation scenarios: charging, discharging, and resting states.
4. Balancing Methods
■ Passive (resistive shunt): Extra energy is burned off as heat.
■ Active – switched capacitor: Capacitors transfer energy between cells.
■ Active – inductor-based: Energy is moved between cells using inductors.
■ Active – DC-DC: Direct energy transfer between cells and pack.
5. Outputs
■ Plots of cell voltages and SOC before and after balancing.
■ Comparison of energy loss and efficiency.
■ Estimation of impact on lifetime with different methods.
6. Roadmap
■ Step 1: Create basic battery pack model.
