Power Transmission and Distribution -- 3
1. Problem Statement
In the last 5 years, there have been numerous instances of wildfires interacting with the
electric power infrastructure resulting in disastrous consequences. Some of these fires
have been started by the electric power infrastructure, such as the Camp Fire in California
in 2018 [1], while in other cases, the electric power infrastructure was impacted by a fire
that was pre-existing, such as the Blue Cut Fire incident in California in 2016 [2]. Being
the fire mitigation specialist of a utility that is located in the U.S. Southwest, you are
responsible for making your transmission and distribution networks resilient against fires
occurring in the wildland-urban interface (WUI). How would you plan to go about it?
The following are some factors that you should consider in your report:
• Why is the problem important (think in terms of technical, economical,
environmental, and social implications)?
• Why is it even more important today (think whether renewables will have any
impact on this problem and/or the solution)?
• What are the typical solutions that exist today (think in terms of preventive
solutions as well as corrective solutions)?
• Are the existing solutions same or different for transmission and distribution
networks?
• What are the limitations of existing methods?
• What is the big idea in your mind to tackle this problem?
• Why will your solution be better in comparison to the existing methods? If possible,
quantify “better” mathematically in terms of the implications listed in the first
bullet point.
• If the problem is solved via your method, what will be the next step(s)?
You may find the following references useful for your project [3]-[16].
References: Will be provided
1. Length: Between 8 and 10 pages typed in PDF (Single column-single spacing, Text:
Justified, Font style: Times New Roman, Font size: 11 pt.)
2. The report must contain the sections in Bold:
• Abstract
• Introduction
• Literature Review
• Proposed Solution Methodology
• Simulation Results** (if possible)
• Conclusion
• References
** If present in the report, the Simulation Results section should contain a numerical
analysis of the methodology that you propose. If you can do this, can add some extra bucks
Please start your bid with "Am Ready" if you read through before bidding.
3. Include at least 2 figures and at least 20 references.
