This case study invites you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of relevant
educational research and theory. You should be able to explain how children learn, and why
this can look different for those with SEND. You'll also be able to critically reflect on your own
teaching using established models and identify areas for future growth. Most importantly,
you'll learn to use educational research and policy to inform creative, inclusive, and
responsible teaching practices.
This assignment centres on applying the graduated approach—Assess, Plan, Do, Review—
through a case study of a pupil you work with. This allows you to ground your academic
work in practical experience. It’s about going beyond strategies and starting to ask why we
do what we do, and how we can do it better.
You need to maintain anonymity of school, colleagues and pupils discussed.
Part 1 of the assignment is structured around the graduated approach. First, you’ll assess
your chosen pupil’s current strengths and needs and decide on a SMART target.
Then, you'll plan an intervention, explaining how theory and research shaped your choices.
Next, in the 'Do' section, you’ll describe how high-quality teaching was—or will be—
implemented. And finally, you’ll evaluate progress in the 'Review' section. Throughout, your
task is to critically analyse, not just describe.
In Part 2, you’ll choose a reflective model—like Gibbs, Kolb, or Driscoll—to evaluate the
effectiveness of your approach. Why that model? How does it help you understand your
teaching more deeply? This is also a chance to consider your next steps: where your
strengths lie, and where you want to grow professionally.
Part 1: The Graduated Approach (2500 words)
Assess: Access pupil documentation for one pupil. Choose a specific outcome that you
wish to develop with the pupil. Consider the pupil's current strengths and potential areas for
development. Decide upon a relevant SMART target and justify your choice.
Plan: Using educational research, frameworks and policy, explain how you planned, or could
plan, to help your pupil to work toward their SMART target. Things you may wish to consider
are the resources required, the role of other professionals and families, and multi-agency
teams. You should critically evaluate and analyse the educational research, frameworks and
policy that underpin your planning, rather than simply describing.
Do: Justify how you will, or did, implement high-quality teaching. Consider how you are
going to, or did, adapt your practice to support the needs of the pupil, underpinned by
relevant research, frameworks and policy.
Review: Evaluate how you will, or did, monitor, the progress of the pupil. You may wish to
consider aspects such as formative and/or summative assessments, questioning,
collaboration with professionals and families or assistive technology
Part 2: Reflective model: your professional development ((500 words)

▪ Choose a reflective model such as Gibbs, Kolb, or Driscoll. Justify your decision to
use that specific reflective model to reflect on the overall efficacy of the approach and
your own next steps in your professional development. This could be through the
development of subject and/or pedagogical knowledge/skills or understanding.
