Manuscript: The Zooming Zoo-Mobile
Spread 1 (Pages 4–5)
Down in the valley where the tall clover grows,
Barnaby Bear had some grease on his nose.
He hammered and clanked in the bright morning sun,
And cheered, "Look at that! My invention is done!"
Spread 2 (Pages 6–7)
The Zooming Zoo-Mobile was shiny and bright,
With buttons of purple and bumpers of white.
"The Big Beach Picnic is starting at noon!
Hop in," hollered Barnaby. "We must leave soon!"
Spread 3 (Pages 8–9)
Miss Penelope Pig gave a squeal of delight,
And bounced in the backseat with all of her might.
Then Detective DeGoat, with a map in his hand,
Said, "Steer to the ocean! I’ll navigate land!"
Spread 4 (Pages 10–11)
They rumbled and roared down the bumpy dirt track,
When Bella the Beaver waved down from a stack.
"I’ve brought my bassoon and a cooler of ice!"
She squeezed herself in, though it wasn't too nice.
Spread 5 (Pages 12–13)
The engine went vroom and the tires went screech,
As three more excited folks headed for the beach.
A juggling giraffe and a kangaroo pair
Leaped over the trunk and flew into the air!
Spread 6 (Pages 14–15)
"Hold on!" cried the driver. "We’re getting quite full!
The engine is starting to sputter and pull!"
But then came a cheetah, a sloth, and a crane,
All carrying blankets to sit on the plain.
Spread 7 (Pages 16–17)
The Zooming Zoo-Mobile was stacked to the sky,
A tower of fur and of feathers up high.
It wiggled and wobbled. It leaned to the right.
The animals whimpered and held on real tight!
Spread 8 (Pages 18–19)
"We’re tipping! We’re tilting!" yelled Detective DeGoat.
"The map is away and my stomach’s afloat!"
The wheels left the pavement, the chassis gave way,
As gravity threatened to ruin their day.
Spread 9 (Pages 20–21)
"Quick!" shouted Barnaby. "Listen to me!
We need to work together, as one, two, and three!
When I count to three, everybody lean left,
With all of your muscle and all of your heft!"
Spread 10 (Pages 22–23)
The sloth moved like lightning, the pig gave a shove,
The kangaroo pushed from the basket above.
With a collective HEAVE-HO and a powerful sway,
They yanked the Zoo-Mobile back the right way!
Spread 11 (Pages 24–25)
The tires hit the gravel, the engine went zoom,
They skidded past palm trees and bushes in bloom.
They coasted right down to the edge of the shore,
And parked on the sand with a triumphant roar!
Spread 12 (Pages 26–27)
With sandwiches, sunshine, and waves in the sea,
The friends were as happy as animals could be.
"We made it!" cried Barnaby, raising a toast,
"The wildest, best drivers on the whole entire coast!"
