WORD FOR MAC - Microsoft Word - Formatting & Styles Specialist

I need assistance to format my Word document.
Requirements:
- Need to insert sequentially numbered "Exhibit" references (Captions) that will update.
- This has something to do with setting "styles" so that the Caption does not interfere with the paragraph it is inserted into.
- Help me change the setting so it works the way one would expect (easily enter Exhibits and have the number update if one is deleted or inserted, without interfering with the formatting of the paragraph).
