Literacy Essay

​No one is born knowing how to read. Hence, we all learned to read and write when we were younger. For some of us, it was a wonderful experience, while others might have struggled. Maybe it was a teacher who taught you to read. Maybe it was a parent or grandparent. Regardless, we all learned, and we all spent many years in school. We all have a literacy story.
This essay asks you to reflect on your learning to read and/or write. What is your literacy story? That is what this essay is about. Who and what caused or impacted your literacy development? How has that affected you? You may focus on learning to write if that is easier.
Things you might want to include in this essay:
• Physical setting or environment
• Historical time
• People or places that strongly influenced you as a reader
• An event or assignment that impacted you
• How often do you read in your free time?
Audience: Anyone in this course (I always suggest you pretend you are writing for someone not in this course who has no idea what the assignment is).

Length: 2 – 3 pages

Format: MLA format (heading and margins)
