“The achievements of civilization have been based on the extraction by elite groups of agricultural surplus.” Discuss this statement, indicating whether you agree or disagree with it, justifying your answer both theoretically and with reference to the historical literature, and outlining the various ways in which surplus can be extracted in an agricultural society
