Time and Movement Drawing
Budget: $10 – $30 USD
On 18 x 24 inch quality paper with conte: make gesture drawings that communicate the motion of the figure, along with a sense of 3D form and space. This exercise is purposefully a "problem to solve"- since our static drawings cannot have literal motion, you will need to consider ways to communicate motion and make choices about sequence, overlay, and mark-making. Make sure the setting is in accurate 2-point perspective. Use your eraser as a mark-making tool as well.
Design dramatic lighting in these drawings. The lighting can be applied to the static objects, or include moments in time as well.
You are welcome/encouraged to simplify the figure as a matter of necessity. Remember, VOLUME AND STRUCTURE are always better than an outline. Remember that changes in lighting can powerfully communicate time and change.
You may choose to load more of the figure's "tricks" onto fewer sheets of paper, or isolate fewer tricks per sheet. You may slow down the playback speed in settings (.25 is the slowest). You're also free to replay sections of the video as much as you like.
Remember the importance of composition, the elements and principles of design, the illusion of form and space, structural thinking, illumination and value structure. Then make decisions about how to use these skills.
Some moments MUST OVERLAP
Minimum of 7 positions / locations
Inventive solution communicates motion / passage of time
Convincing light quality
3D form
Convincing perspectival cues
Ambition
Composition, deep space, use of the page
