BUILD A NETWORK
Budget: $30 – $250 CAD
Description PART 1: Consult on a Network build for a fictitious customer. 20%
Requirements:
• Accuracy: All the items are listed, and links to where you would buy them.
• You did your research and picked the right components for the network.
• Showing your research via links and your defense for your choices.
• Table of parts including price and total price.

The details:
You have been asked to consult on building a network for a medium sized company. The customer has a minimum of 3 departments and spread across a minimum of 2 floors. You can go bigger is you want. You will need to put together a list of all network components needed. This includes routers and switches, cabinetry, network cabling, comms closets on each floor, and anything else you can think of. You will also include what kind of network operating system or systems you will deploy. Will it be window servers only, or will you have a hybrid of other network operating systems. What will your IP addressing scheme look like? Provide a section of what your subnetting design will look like. Using Practical Subnetting examples from the IP Addressing and Subnetting workbook pages 58-73. Please note, you cannot use any of the subnetting examples from anywhere in the book.
You will be itemizing each item, including name, model, quantity, price, with embedded links for where you would buy them. Include the total price for your build. You will present this in the form of a table.
Then for each piece you chose, defend your choices and tell me why you picked it and what lead you to believe it was the best piece. This will require you to go to multiple web sites that offer reviews on the items you are choosing. From those web sites, site the reasons why you picked the piece based on those reviews. You could also be checking forums to see what others say about the pieces you want. Show the links to your research you used in your report, along with a brief description of what you found. You could say: “I went to Tom’s hardware and they said this or that. Or, I read from several reviews, and this is what was said. Based on the information I choose this piece as the best for this build.”
Decide your budget and stick to it. Putting together a well thought out and professional-looking report will go a long way to instill confidence for the customer.
The goal of this project is to show off your research skills as you sell your network build to your potential customer.

PART 2 – You will mark your peers’ submissions based on a rubric provided. 10%

• Provide a cover sheet stating your name and student number, the course name and number, and Lab details like title and page number in textbook.
• Documents are expected to reflect a professional look and feel which includes a logical organization and layout and information is clearly communicated.
• Writing contains no or few grammatical errors which do not impede comprehension.
• Whenever you cite anything from a book, article or website reference it using APA.
• Include your name in the file name of the document being submitted.
