MySQL Workbench Root Password Reset

I am locked out of the root account on MySQL Workbench running on Windows. After following a few online tutorials—starting the server with --skip-grant-tables, using mysqladmin, and editing the my.ini file—the login still fails, so I need a clean, proven method to regain access without harming the existing databases.
