INTRODUCTION
The objective of this assignment is to identify the best locations in the City of Toronto for buying a
house, based on the following criteria:
1) Close to a major grocery store
2) Close to Lake Ontario
3) In a neighbourhood with a low amount of total difference in elevation
4) In a neighbourhood with a lot of vegetation
Use ModelBuilder to create an analysis model that uses only raster functions to create a raster
weighted overlay map showing rankings of all possible locations, based on data classifications,
rankings and weightings that you specify.
Create a one-page layout that includes a set of five maps: one map each for the four data sets that
were used as inputs to the weighted overlay function, and then one map showing the final results of
your analysis. Do not include the grocery stores, neighbourhoods, or the digital elevation model on
your maps.
Include one neatline around all the map elements, an appropriate title, your name, and all necessary
map elements. Use the same scale and colour scheme for all five maps. For all five maps, provide a
caption underneath each that indicates what is shown. The map will be marked out of 10.
The map must use a layout for an 8½” x 11” sheet of paper. When you are ready to submit your
finished map, export the image at a resolution of 300 dpi. You can then upload the image and
submit with the answers to your questions as one MS Word or PDF document.

Questions:
1) When you have completed your analysis, save your model as an image (zoom to full extent in the
ModelBuilder window so your whole model is visible, then select Model --> Export --> To graphic,
then create a jpeg file with image quality set to 100). Upload this file to answer to this question. Be
sure to use file names in your model that are easily identified, such as lake_dist for a file containing
distances from the Lake Ontario.
This model will be evaluated based on the overall logical sequence of steps taken and whether it is
well laid out and easy to understand. As is often the case with GIS analysis, there may be more than
one way to accomplish some of the required analysis tasks, so there is no single, correct method.
However, marks will be deducted for any substantial inefficiencies (i.e., if you used five functions to
accomplish something that could have been done with one or two). (2 marks)
2) In a brief report, please state the steps to you took to meet criteria 1-4 above (i.e., close to
grocery store, close to Lake Ontario, etc). Also discuss the steps in the weighted overlay. Please add
some of your input in the discussion to describe and interpret your map and the final results of your
analysis. For example, you could describe the locations of any areas of high or low scores, and why

number of classes, classification scheme, and weightings. (8 marks)
