High-Speed Piezo Sensor Reader -- 2
Budget: $30 – $250 AUD
Several hundred piezoelectric strain gauges will be bonded in a 6 m × 50 mm ribbon-like array. I want to sample the whole field every few milliseconds yet keep wiring down to roughly two conductors per column, so clever multiplexing or bus techniques are essential. Thickness MUST be less than 10mm, preferably less.
My preference is a self-contained, dedicated data-acquisition unit rather than a microcontroller or FPGA board. That unit must excite/condition the piezo elements, perform rapid scanning, and, ideally, stream raw values to on-board storage; no real-time dashboards are needed. Data can land in binary or CSV as long as the file format is documented.
Deliverables
- INITIALLY, I just want an EXPERT opinion on what could practically be achieved to deliver the peak strain (i.e. not the complete waveform):
- In an array of 200 analogue sensors spread over 6 metres, how fast could they be interrogated
- If more than two wires are used (i.e. split into groups of sensors), how many wires to achieve 1
millisecond per group?
- Estimated cost to build a 6 metre sensor based on cheap piezo elements
- Possible example components to build same
If you have experience with dense sensor arrays, piezo signal conditioning, or custom DAQ hardware, your insight will be valuable.
I will add that the system will only ever have maybe 20 to 30 sensors activated at one time, so the approach I am thinking is where the sensors are masters, rather than polling. The time between signals would be in the order of seconds to hours.

1. I do not pay outside of Freelancer. Any request to bypass the rules will be reported.
