Pre-2000 IPUMS County Demographics Extraction
Budget: $50 – $0 USD
I’m building a sizeable research project that relies on historical census information, and I need someone who knows their way around IPUMS to pull the county-level demographic variables for every pre-2000 decennial year available. The task is straightforward but detail-heavy: define the extract inside the IPUMS interface, download the microdata, and supply it in a ready-to-use format (CSV, Stata, or R—whatever you prefer as long as it imports cleanly).
Because I will be merging these files with other datasets later, consistency across years matters; please keep variable names, coding schemes, and metadata intact. I’d also like the extract setup file or syntax so I can replicate the pull if needed. If you routinely work with IPUMS USA and are comfortable navigating the weighting and confidentiality rules, this should be a quick win.
Deliverables:
• Demographic microdata for all available pre-2000 census years, county identifiers included.
• A brief read-me documenting the steps you took and any recodes applied.
• The original IPUMS extract definition or syntax file.
It deals with the 1850 census of Philadelphia and has all the needed dasta online.
Let me know your timeline and which output format you plan to provide, and we can get started right away.
